Supplement Manufacturers in Europe: Types, Minimums, Certifications (2026)
Quick answer
Supplement manufacturers fall into three groups: contract manufacturers with their own production, white-label suppliers with ready formulas, and companies that produce through partners. For white label from existing formulas, makers often state minimums from a few dozen to a few hundred units; for your own formula, often tens of thousands of capsules or hundreds of kilograms of powder. HACCP is mandatory for every maker; IFS, FSSC 22000 or ISO 22000 are voluntary standards that retailers often ask for. Find manufacturers through search, B2B directories and trade fairs, and always compare quotes for the same formula, volume and scope.
Want your own supplement made and not sure which kind of manufacturer fits? This overview explains how the European market is structured, which minimums, lead times and certifications are typical, and how to compare quotes so the result actually means something.
What types of supplement manufacturers are there?
Three models, which differ in minimum order, speed and control over the formula:
| Model | What it is | Fits when |
|---|---|---|
| Contract manufacturer with own production | Makes your formula in its own plant, often with development, testing and packaging in one place. | you want your own formula and plan larger volumes. |
| White-label supplier | Offers ready, tested formulas you sell under your label. | you want to start fast and small. |
| Partner-production supplier | Coordinates development and packaging and has some or all products made by partners. | you need many dosage forms from one contact; ask who makes what. |
Many manufacturers offer more than one model, for example white label to start and private label with your own formula as the next step. Our white label vs private label guide explains the difference.
What minimum orders are typical?
It depends mostly on the model. From what manufacturers publish on their websites, the rough ranges are:
| Model | Typical minimum order |
|---|---|
| White label from existing formulas | a few dozen to a few hundred jars |
| Private label with your own formula | from a few hundred jars to tens of thousands of capsules |
| Industrial contract manufacturing | tens to hundreds of thousands of capsules or tablets, hundreds of kilograms of powder |
Watch the unit: some makers count jars, others capsules, kilograms of powder or litres. 150,000 capsules at 60 per jar is 2,500 jars. Why a low minimum matters at launch is covered in supplement MOQ explained.
Which certifications exist and what do they mean?
- HACCP: mandatory for every food business under Article 5 of Regulation (EC) No 852/2004. A certificate is not legally required for it, but is often issued.
- IFS Food, FSSC 22000, ISO 22000, BRCGS: voluntary food safety standards audited by independent bodies. Retailers often require one of them.
- GMP: good manufacturing practice. There is no legally required GMP certificate for food supplements; ask which standard and which body audited it.
- Organic: under the EU organic regulation (EU) 2018/848, shown by the control body code. Needed if you sell an organic product.
Ask every manufacturer for the current certificate, with scope and validity. The scope tells you which dosage forms and sites it covers. Whatever the certificates, every batch should ship with a certificate of analysis.
How long does production take?
White label from existing formulas usually ships in 1 to 4 weeks; your own formula usually takes 4 to 16 weeks because of development, sourcing and stability checks. Add time for label design, printing and any national notification, such as the BVL notification in Germany.
Where do you find supplement manufacturers?
- Search: terms such as "supplement contract manufacturer" or "white label supplements" plus your dosage form, for example capsules or softgels.
- B2B directories: platforms such as europages list manufacturers by country and product.
- Trade fairs: Vitafoods Europe is one of the main industry fairs; in 2027 it runs from 18 to 20 May in Barcelona, and we will be there.
- Referrals: designers, labs and logistics providers who work with supplement brands know the makers in practice.
How do you compare quotes fairly?
- Send everyone the same request. Same formula or active list, dosage form, units per batch and packaging.
- Clarify the scope. Are label, printing, certificate of analysis, storage and shipping included or extra?
- Compare price per unit, not the total, and keep the minimum order in view.
- Get lead time and payment terms in writing, such as deposit and balance on delivery.
- Ask for a sample before you order the first batch.

Does it matter which EU country the manufacturer is in?
Legally, no, as long as they produce and document under EU food law. Selling in a market depends on your label, formula and that country's notification, and those duties sit with your brand wherever production happens.
In practice, language, responsiveness and shipping routes matter.
Vita Supplements manufactures in Ljubljana, Slovenia: white label from 300 units in 1 to 4 weeks, private label from 500 units in 4 to 8 weeks, with a certificate of analysis for every batch. Request a free quote and get it within 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find a supplement manufacturer in Europe? +
Search for terms such as "supplement contract manufacturer", use B2B directories such as europages, and visit trade fairs such as Vitafoods Europe. Then send every candidate the same request so the quotes are comparable.
What minimum order is realistic for a first product? +
With white label from existing formulas, often a few dozen to a few hundred jars. Your own formula starts at a few hundred jars or at tens of thousands of capsules, depending on the maker.
Which certifications should a supplement manufacturer have? +
HACCP is mandatory for every food business. Standards such as IFS, FSSC 22000 or ISO 22000 are voluntary but often required by retailers; ask for the current certificate and its scope.
Is a manufacturer in another EU country a disadvantage? +

How do I compare quotes from manufacturers? +
Send everyone the same request, clarify what is included and compare price per unit at the same volume. Ask for a sample before the first order.
